The SENs: Friday 11th August 2017

Our annual Conference will this year be returning to the Westerwood Hotel, near Cumbernauld. The dates are the 7th and 8th December and – like last year – the event will be run in partnership with Social Firms Scotland; Community Enterprise; and the Scottish Community Alliance. Unlike last year’s one day event – Keep it Local, Strength in Numbers – we are returning to the overnight format – altho’ not 100% sure about a Ceilidh this time! The event will also be supported as always by RBS and others. We are currently working on the programme for the event – around an overarching theme of ‘collaboration’ – and expect to have a draft programme and booking form available over the coming weeks.
The Social Innovation Competition, delivered by Firstport as part of the Scottish Government’s 10-year SE Strategy, has opened for applications – paving the way for Scotland’s next generation of social entrepreneurs. SIC 2017 celebrates and supports individuals and start-ups in Scotland who work creatively to solve social issues around culture, heritage and tourism. Three £5000 prizes are on offer for the most exciting and eye-catching solutions to longstanding social issues, with tailored business support from Firstport provided as part of the package. You can discuss your ideas at drop-in sessions in Stirling, Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Deadline for applications is 9th October, with the winners announced on the 7th November. See full press release and competition postcard.
Earlier this year, we invited Thematic SENs to participate in a Tick List Survey – identifying activities or policy areas that SEN members were keen to address in the year ahead. Since then we have hosted several SEN meetings and Community Learning Exchanges (CLEs), focussing on those activities/policy areas selected by SEN members. Next week, we will launch the first of a series of ‘Briefings’ that aim to showcase the approach that social enterprise is taking to address these issues. Our first ‘Briefing’ is on Loneliness and Social Isolation. Others to follow will include Cinema and Regeneration; Sport for Change; Diet and Obesity; and Dementia. For more information on any of above, please email mail@senscot.net.
News this week that Kim Siu has moved on from TSI Moray – Kim has worked with social enterprises across the area for a number of years. Kim’s enthusiasm and passion for social enterprise is contagious, she will be missed. From all of us at Senscot we wish her all the very best for the future.
As of Monday, 14th August, P4P will have its full staff quota – as we welcome both Neil Young (P4P Co-ordinator) and Jennifer Paterson (Interim Support Officer) to the team. P4P will be operating from our new premises in George Sq (see above) from Monday. To coincide with all this, P4P is issuing a press release giving core information on what the service will offer and to whom
Organisations that have identified a collaborative project to transform re-use and repair in Scotland are invited to apply for funding from the Circular Economy Investment Fund. Zero Waste Scotland, working with Resource Futures and Community Resources Network Scotland, are looking to find projects which are: collaborative in nature; of a sufficient scale to inspire others; find new regional or national solutions to re-use and repair; able to provide services based around re-use and repair; or operate with shared facilities and logistics (eg storage, logistics and retail). More information and application forms are available by emailing ZWSCollaborations@resourcefutures.co.uk
Social Enterprise Scotland announced this week the short list for the Social Enterprise Awards Scotland 2017 – great to see a number of SEN members in the list. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in The Scottish Parliament on the evening of Tuesday 7th November.
